Regarding your wish to use a 'real' camera when you want something better, that's your right. Yes, RECENT DROIDS do have PROPER EXPOSURE LOCK.
WHITE BALANCE LOCK MANUAL
And sometimes a ISO like 323 is better than the 200 and 400 steps from the manual exposure menu.
WHITE BALANCE LOCK PRO
If you go along with your investigation on the Pro Shot app, you'll see that sometimes the auto mode shows you the ISO value. If you're talking about the Pro Shot app, it indeed has exposure settings for video, but the GAPS BETWEEN each value are huge for quite a lot of situations. Video mode only gets exposure compensation values.

There's no complete exposure settings FOR VIDEO, pal. If the eV you need isn't covered by adjusting the eV, manually adjust the shutter speed and ISO.Well, I guess you haven't paid much attention to what you've read, but anyway, let me elaborate this a bit more: Hence, if the SDK doesn't allow finer temperature white balance settings, it cannot be done.Īlso, since the question was also about exposure lock, fix the eV - but that will work only within a range of ISO and shutter values (to avoid sacrificing image quality). My last communication with him went along those lines, that it is still limited by what the SDK allows to be done. Head over to the ProShot thread where the developer is quite active and responsive. WB though will not be as granular as ProShot (which I also have), but even the temperature values in ProShot use the same SDK. I remember because I've had shots that were too bright or too dark when moving from a dark place to a brighter place and vice versa. If I set ISO to 400 and Shutter speed to 1/100, and WB to "Sunlight", they stay that way until I change them. If the eV you need isn't covered by adjusting the eV, manually adjust the shutter speed and ISO.
WHITE BALANCE LOCK FULL
Phone cameras, no matter how expensive and "modern", simply will not match the performance of a full camera (except in sunlight where all of them are "great" as advertised).Īlso, since the question was also about exposure lock, fix the eV - but that will work only within a range of ISO and shutter values (to avoid sacrificing image quality). If I'd like a proper photo with proper settings which I can properly customize to my heart's delight, I'd use my X-T1 - not my old Lumia 1020 nor my iPhone 6s. Hence, if the SDK doesn't allow finer temperature white balance settings, it cannot be done.īut to qualify, even the settings in "many recent droids" are not "proper". They would not prevent the exposure parameters like ISO and Shutter Speed from changing according to the variations in light.Įven when it comes to WB settings, it would only be a proper lock if we get temperature values, like we have on the Pro Shot app.Sounds contrary based on my experience. A piece of white Styrofoam (food take-out container) is perfect. These settings don't qualify as proper exposure parameters lock, as they work as "compensational" values. If you want the camera JPEGs then use the target to set a custom WB. You can shoot the target before or after you take the photos. If you're processing raw files and you want accurate white balance then shoot a white balance target and take an actual measurement. Yet they're all capable of doing a good job processing the file - not to worry.

You've got a better chance of winning the lottery than seeing any two of those match up. They're all supposedly reporting the same value - color temp recorded by the camera. There's a 900 degree K difference between the 2 extremes on that list. For example I loaded the same sunny-day-photo raw file into the following raw converters and copied the "As shot" values:

The K temp values that we see both in the camera software and in the various raw converters are not precision values. You can't put much stock in the value that Lightroom reports for "As shot." Nor can you do the same for the values set on the camera.
